Why Choose a Foam (AFFF) Fire Extinguisher
Sometimes called AFFF (which stands for aqueous film-forming foam), foam fire extinguishers are primarily water-based and they work by forming a seal over the surface, suffocating the fire of oxygen which prevents the fire from growing.
Foam extinguishers are red with a cream coloured label and are most commonly supplied in 6 and 9-litre sizes, although other sizes are available. Because of the water content, they are not to be used on electrical appliances that are on fire. They are, however, very good at stopping fires involving flammable liquids, such as fuel and spirits, so they are often found in garages and workshops. They can also be used on class-A fires involving wood, paper and fabrics.
How to use a Foam Extinguisher
Foam fire extinguishers are fairly easy to use and are relatively inexpensive. The process for using a foam extinguisher is much the same as a water extinguisher:
- While the extinguisher is upright, pull out the pin
- Free the hose and aim at the base of the fire
- Squeeze the handles together
