Dry powder fire extinguishers have a reputation for making a mess, however, they are also one of the most effective and adaptable types of extinguishers available.

Dry powder extinguishers work by smothering the fire and starving it of oxygen, thus eradicating its chances of spreading. Identifiable by their distinct blue label, dry powder extinguishers come in a wide variety of sizes, from small 1kg and 2kg units that are suitable for home kitchens, up to 9kg extinguishers that we often place in industrial units.

These adaptable and ever-popular extinguishers are rated for A (wood, paper and textiles), B (flammable liquids), C (flammable gas) and electrical fires, which means they are effective against most of the common types of fire. They are also effective in a wide range of temperatures (a reported -20oc to +60oc), meaning they can be left outside, for example at a building site in the middle of winter.

How to Use a Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher

Using a dry powder extinguisher is very similar to any other type of extinguisher; simply pull out the pin (breaking the tamper-evident tag), aim the hose at the base of the fire and squeeze the handles together, ensuring the base is stable. If you have a large sized extinguisher, it may be best to stand it upright on the floor. Smaller units can be held with one hand on the handles and the other hand securing the base.
