Arguably one of the easiest ways to imagine a Co2 extinguisher is to remember the last time you blew out some birthday candles, that is a simple version of a Co2 extinguisher in action. Co2 is the only gas-based extinguisher since Halon extinguishers were banned around 20 years ago.

Carbon dioxide extinguishers are red with a black stripe label and can often be found in 2kg and 5kg sizes. When used, a Co2 extinguisher emits the gas under pressure and replaces the oxygen in the fire with carbon dioxide – a gas that does not allow combustion to take place.

We often recommend placing Co2 extinguishers in offices and environments where there are a large number of electrical items such as machinery and computers because of their suitability on electric-based fires and flammable liquid fires.

Co2 Extinguishers

How to use a Co2 Extinguisher

1 – Raise the horn and aim at the base of the fire

2 – Pull the pin, breaking the tamper-evident tag

3 – Let go of the horn, use one hand to steady the base of the extinguisher and squeeze the handles together with the other hand

We often find that these extinguishers can be startling for the user, which is why we always include them as part of our training courses. Extra care must be taken when using Co2 extinguishers as they give off a very powerful burst of gas. The user must also be sure to let go of the horn, as this will get freezing cold during use.
